SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

See the treatment chain before you read the specs.

Water enters at the main line, moves through each treatment stage, and then feeds the entire house. The exact hardware varies by model, but the comparison logic stays the same.

SYSTEM TYPE

3-stage cartridge filter

① Pretreatment

Sediment or spin-down filtration protects downstream media when required.

② Main treatment

Carbon, specialty media, ion exchange, oxidation or another primary treatment stage.

③ Optional stages

Softening, salt-free conditioning, UV or polishing filters may be separate components.

MAIN FILTER LIFE
APEC markets the cartridge set for up to 100,000 gallons, but its detailed stage data list 40,000 gallons @ 4 GPM for the KDF stage and >70,000 gallons @ 4 GPM for the GAC stage. Actual replacement timing depends on water quality and the first limiting cartridge.

Routine maintenance

Inspect the housings and monitor pressure drop and water quality. The first-stage pleated sediment cartridge is washable/reusable. Replace the KDF and carbon cartridges when their capacity is reached or treatment performance declines. APEC sells the complete replacement set as FILTER-SET-CB3-KDF-20BB. Shut off and depressurize the system before cartridge service and follow the installation/owner manual.

Major replacement

The normal major service is replacement of the three 20-inch Big Blue cartridges, not the housings themselves. APEC's current replacement bundle is FILTER-SET-CB3-KDF-20BB. Because individual stage capacities differ, use the limiting stage and actual source-water conditions rather than assuming every cartridge will deliver a full 100,000 gallons.

Warranty details

APEC's current warranty page lists all 10-inch and 20-inch Big Blue/Clear/White/Black filters plus Big Duo, Big Trio and bundled systems under a one-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service. Warranty exclusions and shipping/claim conditions apply.

FilterTier watchouts

APEC's current page makes broad contaminant-reduction claims, but FilterTier did not find a current third-party contaminant-reduction certification on the product page for this exact CB3-SED-KDF-CAB20-BB system, so those manufacturer claims should not be treated as equivalent to an NSF-certified reduction claim. APEC's detailed stage data list 40,000 gallons at 4 GPM for the KDF cartridge and more than 70,000 gallons at 4 GPM for the GAC stage even though the page also markets up to 100,000 gallons for the set. The system also has stated operating limits including pH above 7, iron below 3 ppm, manganese below 1 ppm and no iron bacteria.

WHY IT MATTERS

Country-of-origin can affect buyer preference, serviceability, parts availability and perceived manufacturing quality — but it is scored separately from filtration performance.

FILTERTIER PRICE TRACKER

What it actually costs — not what the fake sale badge says.

We track observed selling prices over time and compare today's price with the system's normal range. Crossed-out MSRP and perpetual “50% off” labels do not count as meaningful savings.

How to read this price

Manufacturer-direct APEC price observed at $449.95 on 2026-10-02; product page showed sold out when checked. FilterTier does not infer a discount from a missing/unclear regular price.

A big “discount” does not automatically mean a good deal.

If a system is almost always sold at 40–55% off MSRP, FilterTier treats that sale price as the normal market price and judges value from there.

INSTALLATION CONTEXT

Think about the system in your mechanical room — not just on a product page.

Before your plumber orders it, confirm:

• Main-line size and connection diameter • Available service flow and incoming pressure • Drain requirement / backwash routing • Electrical outlet or UV/controller power • Tank/cartridge replacement clearance • Bypass and isolation valves • Pressure gauges before/after restrictive stages • Floor drain / leak protection where appropriate

FilterTier rule

The best treatment spec is still the wrong purchase if it cannot be installed, serviced, or supplied with enough flow in your actual house.
