3-Stage Sediment/GAC/Carbon Whole House Filter

Homes that want a serviceable three-stage 20-inch Big Blue cartridge system focused on sediment plus chlorine, taste, odor and organic-compound adsorption, with both granular activated carbon and a final carbon-block polishing stage.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

See the treatment chain before you read the specs.

Water enters at the main line, moves through each treatment stage, and then feeds the entire house. The exact hardware varies by model, but the comparison logic stays the same.

SYSTEM TYPE

3-stage cartridge filter

① Pretreatment

Sediment or spin-down filtration protects downstream media when required.

② Main treatment

Carbon, specialty media, ion exchange, oxidation or another primary treatment stage.

③ Optional stages

Softening, salt-free conditioning, UV or polishing filters may be separate components.

MAIN FILTER LIFE
APEC's current system page lists >70,000 gallons @ 4 GPM for the FI-CAB20-BB GAC stage and up to 100,000 gallons for the FI-CBC20-BB carbon-block stage. APEC's current replacement-set page lists >70,000 gallons @ 4 GPM for both carbon stages. Use the first limiting cartridge, source-water conditions and treatment performance rather than assuming a guaranteed 100,000-gallon interval.

Routine maintenance

Inspect the housings and monitor pressure drop and chlorine/taste/odor performance. The first-stage FI-SED20-BB pleated sediment cartridge is washable and reusable. Replace the GAC and carbon-block cartridges as their capacity is reached or treatment performance declines. APEC's current matched replacement set is FILTER-SET-CB3-CBC-20BB. Shut off and depressurize the housings before cartridge service and follow the owner manual.

Major replacement

Normal major service is replacement of the three 20-inch Big Blue cartridges rather than the housings themselves. APEC's matched set is FILTER-SET-CB3-CBC-20BB, observed at $149.00 when checked. Because APEC's current system page and replacement-set page differ on the third-stage capacity wording, FilterTier uses the more conservative replacement logic: monitor the first limiting stage and actual treatment performance.

Warranty details

APEC's current warranty-registration terms list CB3-SED-CAB-CBC20-BB as an eligible model. The standard limited manufacturer warranty is one year; registering an eligible new system within eight weeks of purchase can extend APEC coverage to two years total (one-year manufacturer warranty plus one-year extension), subject to APEC's eligibility, purchase-channel and registration conditions.

FilterTier watchouts

APEC makes broad contaminant-reduction claims for this model, but FilterTier did not verify a current third-party contaminant-reduction certification for the exact CB3-SED-CAB-CBC20-BB system, so those claims should not be treated as equivalent to an NSF-certified reduction claim. The published 15 GPM figure is a system pressure-drop test point (1 psi at 15 GPM), while the carbon-stage capacities are specified at 4 GPM. APEC's current system page says the final carbon block is up to 100,000 gallons, while the current replacement-set page lists >70,000 gallons @ 4 GPM for that stage; this page flags that discrepancy instead of picking the larger number. APEC also specifies source-water limits including pH above 7, silica under 100 ppm, manganese under 1 ppm, iron under 3 ppm, and no iron bacteria or hydrogen sulfide.

RESEARCH STATUS

Verified current APEC CB3-SED-CAB-CBC20-BB product page, FILTER-SET-CB3-CBC-20BB replacement page and warranty-registration terms: 3-stage 20-inch Big Blue architecture, 30-micron washable sediment + 25-micron GAC + 10-micron carbon block, 1-inch FPT, 1 psi system pressure-drop test at 15 GPM, current $399 sold-out status, replacement set at $149, carbon-stage capacity discrepancy documented, and 1-year standard/2-year registered warranty structure.

Origin detail

The current APEC CB3-SED-CAB-CBC20-BB product, replacement-set and warranty-registration materials reviewed do not clearly state the manufacturing or assembly country of this exact whole-house filter system.

WHY IT MATTERS

Country-of-origin can affect buyer preference, serviceability, parts availability and perceived manufacturing quality — but it is scored separately from filtration performance.

FILTERTIER PRICE TRACKER

What it actually costs — not what the fake sale badge says.

We track observed selling prices over time and compare today's price with the system's normal range. Crossed-out MSRP and perpetual “50% off” labels do not count as meaningful savings.

How to read this price

Manufacturer-direct APEC price observed at $399.00 on 2026-10-02; product page showed sold out when checked. FilterTier does not infer a discount from a missing/unclear regular price.

A big “discount” does not automatically mean a good deal.

If a system is almost always sold at 40–55% off MSRP, FilterTier treats that sale price as the normal market price and judges value from there.

INSTALLATION CONTEXT

Think about the system in your mechanical room — not just on a product page.

Before your plumber orders it, confirm:

• Main-line size and connection diameter • Available service flow and incoming pressure • Drain requirement / backwash routing • Electrical outlet or UV/controller power • Tank/cartridge replacement clearance • Bypass and isolation valves • Pressure gauges before/after restrictive stages • Floor drain / leak protection where appropriate

FilterTier rule

The best treatment spec is still the wrong purchase if it cannot be installed, serviced, or supplied with enough flow in your actual house.
