WHOLE HOUSE MAX-20

Large city-water homes with roughly six or more bathrooms that want an automatically backwashing catalytic-carbon filter for chlorine/chloramine taste and odor concerns and whose simultaneous demand fits APEC's published 16 GPM service / 20 GPM peak ratings.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

See the treatment chain before you read the specs.

Water enters at the main line, moves through each treatment stage, and then feeds the entire house. The exact hardware varies by model, but the comparison logic stays the same.

SYSTEM TYPE

High-flow whole-house filter

① Pretreatment

Sediment or spin-down filtration protects downstream media when required.

② Main treatment

Carbon, specialty media, ion exchange, oxidation or another primary treatment stage.

③ Optional stages

Softening, salt-free conditioning, UV or polishing filters may be separate components.

MAIN FILTER LIFE
APEC gives two current lifespan statements on the WTS-MAX-20 page: 600,000–1,000,000 gallons / up to 10+ years when properly backwashed, and elsewhere 5–8 years for the Whole-House-Max media. FilterTier surfaces the discrepancy and uses 5–8 years as the more conservative planning interval.

Routine maintenance

WTS-MAX-20 uses an electronic programmable control valve to backwash the catalytic-carbon bed automatically, so it needs electrical power and a drain line. APEC markets the design as eliminating routine prefilter changes, but the system still relies on correct backwash programming and periodic long-cycle media replacement. Check the control head, drain discharge and treatment performance periodically and follow the WTS-MAX/control-valve manual.

Major replacement

The catalytic-carbon media is the major long-cycle service item. APEC's current page contains two different life statements: 600,000–1,000,000 gallons and up to 10+ years when backwashed properly, while another section states Whole-House-Max media is maintenance-free for 5–8 years. FilterTier does not merge those into a single guaranteed lifespan; plan conservatively and verify replacement need from water quality, chlorine/chloramine breakthrough and actual usage.

Warranty details

APEC's current whole-house warranty covers WTS-MAX systems for 10 years on tanks, valves, in/out non-electric heads, bypasses and fittings and five years on solid-state electronic heads where applicable. Standard exclusions and claim conditions apply. The current WTS-MAX product page also advertises a 10-year limited warranty.

FilterTier watchouts

This is a backwashing catalytic-carbon filter, not a true water softener. It requires electrical power and a drain line, unlike APEC's non-backwashing GREEN-CARBON family. APEC's product page makes chlorine, chloramine and VOC claims and says the media is NSF certified, but FilterTier did not verify a current whole-system contaminant-reduction certification for the exact WTS-MAX-20-FG. The same page gives conflicting 5–8 year versus up-to-10+ year media-life language, which FilterTier flags rather than hiding.

ORIGIN & MANUFACTURING

Where this system is actually made.

FilterTier distinguishes headquarters, design, manufacturing and final assembly. When an exact model's origin is not publicly confirmed, we say that instead of guessing.

MADE / ASSEMBLED IN

Designed and engineered in the USA; exact assembly origin not clearly disclosed

RESEARCH STATUS

Verified current APEC WTS-MAX-20-FG product page and whole-house warranty: 6+ bathroom positioning, 16 GPM service / 20 GPM peak, 1-inch FPT, 2.0 cu ft catalytic carbon, automatic electronic backwash, power + drain requirement, current $1,599.99 sold-out status, split 10-year/5-year component warranty, and conflicting manufacturer media-life statements documented rather than normalized.

Origin detail

APEC states its whole-house systems are designed and engineered in the USA, but the current WTS-MAX-20-FG materials reviewed do not clearly state that the complete system is manufactured or assembled entirely in the USA.

WHY IT MATTERS

Country-of-origin can affect buyer preference, serviceability, parts availability and perceived manufacturing quality — but it is scored separately from filtration performance.

FILTERTIER PRICE TRACKER

What it actually costs — not what the fake sale badge says.

We track observed selling prices over time and compare today's price with the system's normal range. Crossed-out MSRP and perpetual “50% off” labels do not count as meaningful savings.

How to read this price

Manufacturer-direct APEC price observed at $1,599.99 on 2026-10-02; product page showed sold out when checked. FilterTier does not infer a discount from a missing/unclear regular price.

A big “discount” does not automatically mean a good deal.

If a system is almost always sold at 40–55% off MSRP, FilterTier treats that sale price as the normal market price and judges value from there.

INSTALLATION CONTEXT

Think about the system in your mechanical room — not just on a product page.

Before your plumber orders it, confirm:

• Main-line size and connection diameter • Available service flow and incoming pressure • Drain requirement / backwash routing • Electrical outlet or UV/controller power • Tank/cartridge replacement clearance • Bypass and isolation valves • Pressure gauges before/after restrictive stages • Floor drain / leak protection where appropriate

FilterTier rule

The best treatment spec is still the wrong purchase if it cannot be installed, serviced, or supplied with enough flow in your actual house.
